In 1798 Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree bought land a large tract of land in Murfreesboro. After his death, his daughter, Sally Murfree Manet settled onto the property and built a simple two room structure that over time became the opulent Oakland’s Mansion.
Today people claim to see Sally throughout the house, often in her husband’s office and the stairs. She’s also been spotted looking out of an upstairs window from time to time. According to legend, she’s mourning the loss of several of her children who died from cholera in the 1800s.
Oakland’s is one of the most haunted old homes in Murfreesboro. If you’d like to learn more about the house, check out my book Southern Ghost Stories: Murfreesboro, Spirits of Stones River.
